Cancer can change a person’s life in ways no one ever expects. It does not discriminate based on fame, wealth or age, and even those who have spent decades entertaining millions can suddenly find themselves facing an intensely personal battle away from the spotlight.

For beloved Australian actress Magda Szubanski, that reality became painfully clear after she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.

The 65-year-old star, best known for her iconic role in Kath & Kim, has now opened up about her health journey in a deeply personal interview, revealing what life has been like since her diagnosis and what she has been told about the future.

Szubanski was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in May 2025.

Since then, she has allowed fans to see glimpses of what she has been going through, including photographs and videos taken during her time in hospital while undergoing intensive treatment.

Earlier this year, she shared the hopeful news that she was in remission.

But remission has not meant that the uncertainty is gone.

In her first major public interview since revealing her diagnosis, Szubanski spoke candidly about living with a cancer that doctors consider incurable after relapse.

Her words were remarkably honest — and, despite the seriousness of her situation, she still managed to bring her trademark humor to the conversation.
