Louisa Peck had spent much of her life rejecting religion and anything she considered spiritual.

She described herself as a “materialist atheist” and said she had little interest in the idea of an afterlife, heaven or anything that could not be explained through the physical world.

But in November 1982, when Peck was just 22 years old, she experienced something that would challenge nearly everything she thought she understood about death.

After a night of drinking and taking drugs in a Manhattan nightclub, Peck says she and her date ran out of cocaine and purchased more white powder from a stranger inside the club.

What they believed they had bought, however, was allegedly not cocaine.

According to Peck, the substance was actually lidocaine, a local anesthetic.

What happened next turned a night out into a life-threatening emergency.

Peck began experiencing frightening physical symptoms. Her peripheral vision appeared to close in, orange specks began appearing in front of her eyes, and even the writing on a bathroom stall became impossible for her to understand.

When she eventually returned to her date, she told him she could not breathe.

Her body was beginning to shut down.

Peck later said she suffered a grand mal seizure followed by cardiac arrest. As a bartender desperately attempted to revive her with CPR, Peck remained unresponsive for approximately three minutes.

But while her body lay inside the nightclub, Peck says her consciousness had taken her somewhere completely different.

‘I didn’t have any fear’

Peck remembers what happened during those minutes with remarkable clarity.

Rather than experiencing darkness or nothingness, she says she suddenly felt as though she had been propelled out of Manhattan and into an entirely different place.

“I was rocketing out from Manhattan,” she recalled.

She then found herself hundreds of feet above an ocean, looking down at the water below.

Under ordinary circumstances, being hundreds of feet in the air and falling toward the ocean might have been terrifying. But Peck says she felt no fear at all.

Instead, she was remarkably calm.

“I could see the ocean below me, and I was diving toward it, and I thought ‘isn’t it like concrete because I’m like 300 ft up isn’t that like concrete when you hit it’ you know?” she recalled during an interview with Coming Home.

“But I didn’t have any fear, I was just like ‘we’ll see’ and so then I dove straight down,” she explained.

As she continued downward, Peck says she noticed something unexpected.

She saw an old, weather-worn house.

Something about it immediately felt important.

“I looked and I saw this old, weather-worn house and I thought that house has to do with me, and I [have] got to get there,” she recalled.

“Next thing I know, I’ve reached the house but I’m at the door.”

What happened when she entered the house would become one of the most significant parts of the experience.
