My son walked across the graduation stage wearing a bright red dress while nearly six hundred people watched.

Some laughed.

Some whispered.

Others simply stared.

I was the only person in that auditorium who understood why he had chosen that dress.

At least, I thought I was.

The whispers began before Ethan’s name was even called.

By the time he stepped onto the stage, heads were turning in every direction. Parents leaned toward one another. Students covered their mouths as they laughed. Phones appeared in raised hands.

Then someone sitting several rows behind me spoke loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

“What is wrong with that guy?”

A few people laughed.

I felt my entire body tense.

Every instinct I had as a mother told me to stand up, find Ethan and pull him away from the attention.

But Ethan never looked toward the crowd.

He never slowed down.

He simply walked toward the principal, shook his hand, accepted his diploma and stood beneath the bright stage lights in that red dress.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

He simply stood there.

Almost six hundred people were looking at him.

And somehow, he looked completely calm.

Two weeks earlier, however, he had been sitting across from me at our kitchen table, looking far less certain.
