I expected five and a half decades to have erased a promise four teenagers made beside a quiet lake.

Instead, when I returned to that place 55 years later, I found three boxes waiting on our old bench.

Each one had my name on it.

And nothing inside those boxes was what I expected.

I knew something was wrong before I even reached the bench.

Through the trees, I could see it almost exactly where we’d left it all those years ago.

Nobody was sitting there.

I’d prepared myself for that.

Three old friends scattered across different countries had plenty of reasons to forget a promise we’d made when we were seventeen.

Life had a way of doing that.

People married. They moved. They built careers. They raised children. Parents died. Friends disappeared from daily life. Years became decades almost without anyone noticing.

So I wasn’t surprised to see an empty bench.

What I wasn’t prepared for were the three boxes sitting on it.

Each one had my name written across the top.

HAROLD.

I stood there for several seconds, unable to move.

Then I walked closer.

The first box had a clear lid.

I looked through it.

Inside was something I hadn’t seen since the summer of 1970.

A red fishing lure.

The sight of it brought back an entire summer in an instant.

The bench itself was smaller than I remembered. Its wooden boards had turned gray with age, and the surface was rough from decades of rain, snow and sunlight.

But on one end, four initials were still carved into the wood.

H. T. R. N.

I ran my thumb over them.

Harold.

Tommy.

Ray.

Nick.

We’d carved those initials there on the night we graduated high school in 1970.

We were seventeen years old and convinced the world was waiting for us.

That night, we’d sat beside the lake until almost midnight, talking about everything we were going to do with our lives.

Tommy’s family was moving to Australia.
