‘Saturated with love’

Inside, Peck says she suddenly understood what the house represented.

She believed she had reached the home of her ancestors.

“I knew [that] this is the house of my ancestors, and they have all come this way through this house,” she said.

She could not see the people she believed were there in a conventional physical sense. Yet she says she could feel generations of her family surrounding her.

Among them, she experienced the strongest presence of a grandfather who had died before she was born.

“They were all really excited to meet me, really happy that I was crossing over ready to greet me, but I couldn’t see them, I could just feel them,” Peck recalled.

The experience then appeared to move beyond the house.

Peck says she was carried through a window before eventually finding herself moving toward an incredibly bright light.

It was there, she says, that she experienced a sensation unlike anything she had encountered during her life.

She described the feeling as an overwhelming sense of love and acceptance.

“I was just completely engulfed by love completely saturated with love,” she said.

But the experience did not continue indefinitely.

According to Peck, something suddenly grabbed her “by the sternum.”

Then she heard what she describes as an ethereal voice.

“You can’t stay, you’re not done yet,” she claims the voice told her.

And then, she says, she was pulled back.

Coming back was a ‘bummer’

Back inside the Manhattan nightclub, the effort to save Peck’s life was still underway.

For approximately three minutes, she had been unresponsive following the cardiac arrest.

Then her heart began beating again.

As she regained consciousness, Peck remembers hearing someone asking her questions.

“How many fingers, what is your name?”

She was alive.

But according to Peck, returning to her body was not the joyful experience someone might expect after surviving death.

“I had just come alive again it was the hugest bummer,” she said.

The experience would eventually become the subject of her book, “Die-Hard Atheist: from NDE Denier to Full-on Woo-Woo.”

For someone who had spent much of her life identifying as an atheist, the experience created an enormous conflict.

Peck says she initially wanted to dismiss what had happened and return to her normal life as if nothing unusual had occurred.

But, she says, that became increasingly difficult.

‘No dream or hallucination’

Peck was raised as an atheist and says she resisted giving the experience a spiritual interpretation.

She wanted to believe there was a rational explanation.

Yet what followed her return to life made the experience even harder for her to simply forget.

“I was determined to settle back into normal life as if nothing had happened and the experience had meant nothing, but my spirit energy deflectors had been permanently damaged,” Peck, who now lives in Oregon, told Need To Know.

“I knew this ‘reality’ had been no dream or hallucination.”

For Peck, the story did not end when her heart started beating again.

In fact, she says some of the strangest experiences happened afterward.

Peck says she began seeing the dead

Following her near-death experience, Peck claims she began having encounters that she struggled to explain.

She says she saw ghosts, received messages that she believed came from dead people and occasionally experienced what she interpreted as knowing something before it happened.

One of the experiences she kept private for years involved what she described as a conversation with her deceased sister.

Peck has acknowledged that she remained silent about many of these experiences because she was afraid others would think she was “grandiose and crazy.”

But over time, those experiences became increasingly important to how she understood what had happened to her.

Interestingly, Peck says the most transformative part of the entire experience was not necessarily the three minutes during which she believed she was in the afterlife.

Instead, she says it was everything that happened after she was revived.

“It was the aftereffects, not the near-death experience itself, that proved to me the coexistence of a spiritual plane,” she said.

The experience fundamentally changed the way she viewed death—and, ultimately, the way she viewed life.

A completely different understanding of existence

Peck’s beliefs today are dramatically different from the worldview she says she held before her cardiac arrest.

She once described herself as an atheist who rejected spiritual ideas. After her experience and what she says followed it, she came to believe that consciousness and spirituality could not simply be dismissed.

“I now believe intelligence and love are one, and that they manifest as the entirety of the universe—including life,” she said.

Her story remains a personal account of a near-death experience, and interpretations of such experiences vary widely. For Peck, however, the three minutes when her heart stopped became a defining moment that permanently changed her understanding of existence.

What began as a terrifying medical emergency in a Manhattan nightclub eventually became, in her telling, a journey that challenged her lifelong beliefs.

Whether someone interprets Peck’s experience as evidence of an afterlife, a powerful experience produced during a medical crisis, or something that remains unexplained, one thing is certain: she says it changed the way she sees death forever.
